 “The Journey Continues—Kon Tiki”

 

This year’s evening theme will be Thor Heyerdahl’s Kon Tiki journey to the Polynesian islands. Kon Tiki left Callao Peru on the afternoon of April 28, 1947 and arrived 101 days later traveling 4,300 miles to land at an islet off Raroia Atoll in the Tuamotu group of Polynesian islands simulating what was believed to be pre-Columbian materials and technologies; the journey may have been the moon walk of its day.  The Explorers Club flag was flown atop the balsa raft during its voyage.

The Explorers Club 3 Island BBQ will celebrate this expedition and the exploration accomplishments of our membership featuring a special Polynesian Islands inspired cocktail the “Mai Tai” as well as a “Peach Bourbon Smash” with Bulliet Bourbon to pair with a special featured BBQ from the Dinosaur BBQ of New York which includes St. Louis Pork Ribs and Prime Beef Brisket-maybe the best Texas BBQ in New York City. We will have dancing and music provided by DJ Marla from Manhattan City Music who is a very talented musician and DJ.  Casual island dress and summer attire is suggested. The two most originally dressed festive man and woman in the themes of Polynesia native dress or Kon Tiki’s Crew will each receive a special Door Prize.  The Door Prize includes one book each of “Kon-Tiki” by Thor Heyerdahl of later editions/printings of the original book.

As this is one of our most popular members events, we encourage you to reserve your tickets now and invite guests. Guests may also make reservations by referring to a member friend’s name and using their own credit card (if you are a guest and paying for a reservation online there is a section online called notes where you can put the members name that is your friend). 

The event will be held at Club Headquarters, 46 East 70th Street; on Thursday 9/05/24 check-in at 6:00 pm and cocktails at 6:15 pm, with dinner served approximately 7:00 PM (food service over at 8:45 PM) and the event ends at 10:00 PM.
