Ghost Town Living: Bringing The Dead Back To Life
Regular price $35.50Join The Explorers Club on Monday, December 9th, to learn about a unique restoration project taking place in the mountains over Death Valley, California.
Brent Underwood has spent the past 4 years trying to bring life back to the abandoned mining town of Cerro Gordo, perched at 8,500 ft in the mountains above Death Valley. Once the largest silver mine in California, over $500 million worth of minerals were pulled out of the hills of Cerro Gordo. It was known as “the mines that built Los Angeles.” But that was over 150 years ago.
Since then, the town, and much of the historic events that happened there, have been forgotten to time. Underwood moved there in March of 2020 to try to uncover the lost history and make Cerro Gordo a destination for future generations. What followed were fires, floods, earthquakes, and…a life’s calling. In his talk, Underwood will recount the adventures exploring the 30 miles of underground mines, the importance of understanding your surroundings, and what it takes to keep history alive in 2024.
