Explorers Club Member James Lippitt Clark, born in 1883, was an American explorer, naturalist, and artist known for his contributions to the field of exploration and his artistic works depicting wildlife and landscapes. He had a lifelong passion for the natural world, which led him on numerous expeditions to remote and unexplored regions.
Throughout his career, Clark traveled to different parts of the world, including Africa, Asia, and South America, to study and illustrate the native flora and fauna. He often worked closely with renowned naturalists and scientists, contributing to their research through his artistic depictions. His illustrations and paintings are notable for their accuracy and attention to detail, capturing the essence of the animals and their natural habitats.
Clark became a Member of The Explorers Club in 1912, and his expeditions and scientific contributions were recognized and supported by the Club. His involvement allowed him to collaborate with fellow explorers, scientists, and scholars, fostering knowledge exchange and furthering exploration efforts. Several of Clarks' artworks, and particularly bronze sculptures, are on display at The Explorers Club's headquarters in New York City.
This Edition is made possible by Anne Brockinton Lee, the widow of Robert M. Lee, who was an Explorers Club Member and close friend of James Lippitt Clark. This is the third Special Edition of James Lippitt Clark bronzes by The Explorers Club. The earlier editions were of an Ibex commemorating our Centennial in 2004, and an African Cape buffalo in 2006. Historical images of Clark, included on this page, are for historical reference only.
