The Explorers Club is proud to release this limited edition printed poster, celebrating the Bell X-1's famous supersonic flight on October 14th, 1947.

On October 14th, 1947, over Muroc Air Base in the Mojave Desert, history was made with the first manned supersonic flight.

Piloted by U.S. Airforce Captain and Explorers Club Member Charles "Chuck" Yeager, the Bell X-1 -- a bright orange aircraft nicknamed "Glamorous Glennis" -- exceeded Mach 1 and flew faster than the speed of sound.

It reached an incredible speed of Mach 1.06 (700 MPH or 1,100 KPH) before gliding to a safe landing in the desert. Many thought that the aircraft would break apart upon reaching the sound barrier. However, the X-1's bullet shape, thin wings, and horizontal stabilizer made it an ideal craft for supersonic travel.

The Bell X-1 Supersonic Flight Poster features original artwork commissioned by The Explorers Club, based on iconic images of the X-1 in flight. An accurate model of the X-1, signed by Yeager, is on display at The Explorers Club's world-famous Archives in New York City. Now, the Bell X-1 can hang in your home, office – or cockpit!
