This richly illustrated multimedia lecture will take the audience on an unforgettable journey into the jungles and bullet-scarred villages of Central America during the upheaval of the 1980s. Danger lurks at every turn as Scott Wallace ventures up rebel-infested mountain roads, boards helicopters buzzing the treetops to dodge heat-seeking missiles, and travels by dugout canoe along hotly contested waterways in his quest to uncover the truth. Based on his new visual and written memoir, Central America in the Crosshairs of War, the lecture will also raise timely questions about U.S. foreign policy, the uses of American military power, and the origins of the current immigration crisis on the southern border. This lecture will especially appeal to those interested in the intersection of exploration and war reportage, human and Indigenous rights, war photography, and the business of reporting the news in a time of widespread deception and disinformation.
