Join The Explorers Club on September 8th for a fascinating presentation about a pioneering conservation mission in São Tomé & Príncipe and the Gulf of Guinea, focused on the whale shark (Rhincodon typus), the world’s largest fish and a vulnerable migratory species.

Combining storytelling, field science, community engagement, and policy ambition, this talk by EC50 2026 honoree Hugues de Kerdrel will open with children’s voices introducing William’s story and the human-caused threats facing whale sharks, then follow the mission’s three pillars: science, education, and policy. The presentation explains how researchers and local fishers are working together to build the first robust regional baseline through sightings, photo-identification, and satellite tagging, transforming fishers into explorers, observers, and ocean guardians.

The talk also highlights the major knowledge gap in the Gulf of Guinea, where whale shark abundance, seasonality, movement routes, and risk exposure remain poorly understood. By mapping whale shark presence and migration corridors, Mission William aims to support future protection measures, including an offshore protected corridor between the Gulf of Guinea and St Helena by 2030, aligned with emerging high-seas governance under the UN's Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction framework.
