Saving Big Cats
Regular price $35.50Join The Explorers Club on for a look into some of the stories and images featured in Big Cats, a new book promoting the global conservation of lions, tigers, jaguars, and more.
This talk will delve into a few of the nine stories included in Steve Winter and Sharon Guynup’s new book, “Big Cats,” which includes work produced on four continents that has had tangible impact. It includes L.A’s P-22: Steve’s photo of P-22, “The Hollywood Cougar” made the cat a celebrity in the land of celebrities and built support for what will be one of the world’s largest wildlife overpasses over L.A’s 101 Freeway, which opens Dec 2, 2026.
The team’s work also helped pass a new U.S. law, the Big Cat Public Safety Act, which banned private ownership as well as ended mass-breeding, trafficking and hands-on contact with big cats. Another story exposed black market trade of tigers from the infamous Thai Tiger Temple, (a Buddhist monastery and $3 million/year tiger tourism attraction), sparking its closure. Other stories aided local conservation of snow leopards in the Indian Himalayas and jaguars in Brazil’s Pantanal wetlands.
This talk will cover how Steve made these images, the teams’ choices on what they needed to cover, and both he and Sharon will outline how this work, independently and together, sparked change — how photography and storytelling can have impact.
