Join The Explorers Club to learn about the profound perspective field art can bring to exploration - with Member Ben Chan.
What happens when we slow down long enough to truly “see” the world around us?
Inspired by fellow Explorers Club member and expedition artist Toby Wright during a journey to Mongolia's Gobi Desert, Benjamin Chan began experimenting with plein air watercolor painting as a way to document his experiences in the field. What started as a simple creative exercise became an unexpected discovery: painting changed not only what he noticed, but how he experienced the places he explored.
Drawing from recent expeditions, Benjamin shares how this practice has deepened his sense of observation and connection to the natural world. He also reflects on the legacy of fellow Explorers Club member Albert Operti, whose artwork helped bring Arctic exploration to life more than a century ago.
Through personal stories and watercolor sketches, Benjamin invites audiences to rediscover the value of intentional observation in an increasingly digital world. His message is simple: artistic talent is not a prerequisite for creative exploration. Sometimes, picking up a brush and taking the time to look can open entirely new ways of seeing and understanding our world.
