Join The Explorers Club for a lecture on conserving Okapi, the Ghost of the Forest, amid escalating armed conflict and a major Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Globally Endangered and found only in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the okapi is a true national icon, admired for its gentle nature and remarkable grace. Widely recognized as a symbol of conservation in the country, the okapi features prominently in the logo of the Institute in Congo for the Conservation of Nature (ICCN), and is so deeply valued that an entire protected area—the Okapi Wildlife Reserve—has been established to safeguard its future within the forests of the Ituri.

Yet the Ituri Rainforest faces escalating threats from poaching, several groups of violent insurgents, and agricultural expansion. Founded in 1987, The Okapi Conservation Project (OCP) works to safeguard the Okapi Wildlife Reserve (OWR) which plays a critical role in conserving biodiversity and regulating climate, while sustaining the daily livelihoods of more than 100,000 people, including Indigenous Mbuti and Efe communities.

In-person tickets are $20 for Members, and $35 for the General Public.
Check-in will begin at 6:00 pm, with a beer and wine reception from 6:00 – 7:00 pm
