Join The Explorers Club on December 17th for a deep dive into an ongoing flag expedition exploring radio-resistant extremophiles in the Pacific.

Join us to welcome home Flag 214 and the team from the 2026 XX500 Marshall Islands Extremophile Expedition, as they recount their journey to Bikini and Rongelap Atolls to collect samples of radioresistant extremophiles at the site of the USA's mid-20th century nuclear weapons testing campaign. Initial results from in-depth genetic and epigenetic sequencing of samples from the atolls will be presented, highlighting thousands of newly discovered species of bacteria, fungi, and viruses, which so far appear to be unique to this area. Also examined are a timecourse of cores from the sediment, plant and animal responses to the nuclear testing, and the current levels of radiation found across the atolls. Finally, we will present the protocol for real-time DNA nanopore sequencing in the field (on the boat), the expansion of genomics capacity and education with the College of the Marshall Islands, and the long-term plans for these data and results, including the follow-up on predicted new biomolecules and possible novel medicines from these data.

In-person tickets are $20 for Members, and $35 for the General Public.
Check-in will begin at 6:00 pm, with a beer and wine reception from 6:00 – 7:00 pm
